Set your alarm for 5.40am in August and you'll understand something the tourist guides never mention: the best golf in Murcia doesn't happen at Roda at all, it happens forty minutes down the road while the tarmac is still cool and the Mar Menor is doing that flat, silver, first-light thing it only does before eight o'clock. I've done this drive more times than I can count this summer, coffee in one hand, clubs rattling in the boot, radio off because the only sound worth hearing at that hour is the wind through the almond trees on the way out of Los Alcázares. Roda's a fine course and I play it more than any other, but there are five days a month when a proper local knows it's worth the petrol to go further.

Why bother driving in August heat

Because the courses that get overlooked by the coach-trip crowd are exactly the ones with shade, elevation and a bit of breeze. Roda and the resort courses around Los Alcázares sit low and flat against the Mar Menor, which is glorious in May and a furnace by 11am in August. Head inland or up towards the sierra and you pick up a few hundred metres of altitude, pine cover on the fairways, and greenkeepers who water at 4am rather than dusk, which changes how the ball rolls off the tee completely. None of this is written on the course websites. You only learn it from other members moaning in the clubhouse, or from a caddie who's worked the circuit for fifteen years and has opinions about every single track in the region.

The trick locals use is simple: book the 7am slot, play nine holes fast, then take the siesta break at the clubhouse restaurant rather than driving home in the worst of it. Every course on this list does breakfast or a decent menu del día, and most will let you sit out the heat with a cold Estrella and a plate of jamón until the late afternoon light comes back soft and playable.

1. Hacienda del Álamo (Fuente Álamo, about 35 minutes). This is the one I send visiting friends to first. The clubhouse sits up on a rise so there's actually a breath of wind most mornings, and the front nine winds through pine and olive rather than the open scrubland you'd expect. Ask at the pro shop about the early "amanecer" rate, most tourists never hear about it and it's noticeably cheaper than the midday price.
2. El Valle Golf Resort (Murcia city side, about 45 minutes). Sits right against the regional park, so the back nine has genuine tree cover, a rarity round here. In August the temperature drop under those pines is real, not imagined. Locals treat this as the "shade course" and it fills up fast on the hottest weeks, so ring ahead rather than turning up.
3. Condado de Alhama Golf Resort (Alhama de Murcia, about 50 minutes). A proper mountain-backdrop layout with the Sierra Espuña rising behind the 14th, and it plays a good five degrees cooler than the coast most mornings. The bunkering is unforgiving if you're wayward off the tee, but the view alone is worth the drive before the heat haze rolls in.
4. La Torre Golf Resort (Roldán, about 30 minutes). Quietly one of the best-conditioned courses in the region and criminally under-booked by anyone staying near the coast. The par 3s here are genuinely tricky, and the restaurant does a seafood rice on Fridays that's better than most places in Los Alcázares itself.
5. Mar Menor Golf Resort (Torre-Pacheco, about 25 minutes). The closest of the five and worth it purely for the lagoon-adjacent finishing holes, which catch whatever sea breeze is going even in the stickiest weeks. It's the easiest one to combine with a proper long lunch afterwards since it's barely further than the supermarket run.

None of these will show up first when you search generic "golf near Roda" listings online, they tend to get buried under the bigger resort marketing budgets. What the guides leave out

A few things I've learned the hard way. First, buggies are not optional in August after 10am, several of these clubs will actively stop you walking the back nine once the mercury climbs, and rightly so. Second, always ring rather than book online for the dawn slots, plenty of clubs hold a handful back for members and locals and simply don't list them on the app. Third, pack more water than feels reasonable.
