5 Shaded Family Picnic Spots Near Roda Golf for August 2026

My daughter refused to get out of the car at Playa Barnuevo last Tuesday. Not because of the water, not because of the sand, but because the picnic bench we'd picked out was in full sun and she declared it "an oven." She wasn't wrong. It was gone 1pm, the metal bench top could've fried an egg, and our sandwiches had gone slightly warm and sad inside twenty minutes. Lesson learned. If you're picnicking near Roda Golf in August, shade isn't a nice-to-have, it's the whole plan.

Since then we've been on a bit of a mission, scoping out proper tree cover within a short drive of the resort. Here's what actually works, tried and tested with two kids, a dog, and a cool bag that's seen better days.

Our Go-To Shaded Spots for a Family Picnic

These aren't ranked, because honestly it depends on the day and how far you fancy driving. But all five have real, proper shade, not the wishful-thinking kind.

  1. Parque Almansa, Los Alcázares. Ten minutes from Roda Golf and my personal favourite for a lazy midday stop. Tall pines, benches dotted throughout, and it's right off the Mar Menor promenade so you can wander down for a paddle after lunch. Gets busy with local families around 2pm on weekends, so we try to grab a spot by half twelve.
  2. Santiago de la Ribera's Paseo Colón. The palm-lined stretch along the seafront here throws decent shade most of the day, and there are chiringuitos nearby if you fancy topping up with an ice cream rather than carrying everything yourself. Good for a picnic with a sea view without the sand getting in the tortilla.
  3. The pine forest at San Pedro del Pinatar's Regional Park. A bit further out, maybe twenty five minutes, but worth it. Proper pine woodland right next to the salt flats and mud baths, with picnic tables tucked under the trees. We usually combine it with a muddy dip for the kids, then dry off in the shade while we eat. Just watch for resin dripping off the branches onto the picnic blanket, it's happened to us more than once.
  4. The pine grove at Los Narejos. Smaller and quieter than the others, right by the marina. Less well known, which suits us fine when we want somewhere calm rather than a full-on family scene. Decent shade from mid-morning through to late afternoon.
  5. Parque de las Comunidades, San Javier. Handy if you've got a tee time booked and want to fit a picnic round it without driving miles. Mature trees, a play area for the kids to burn off energy, and it's close enough to Roda Golf that you can nip back for a swim after.

Timing It Right in August Heat

We've had to shift our whole picnic schedule this summer. Anything after 1pm and you're fighting the sun even under decent tree cover, because the heat radiates up off the ground too. Our new routine is out the door by 11am, food eaten by half twelve, and everyone's either in the shade with a book or in the water by 1.

Evenings work brilliantly too, and honestly might be the better option in August. Head out around 7pm when the worst of the heat has broken, and you get golden light through the pines instead of harsh midday glare. If you're staying in one of the holiday rentals near Roda Golf, most are a quick hop from all five of these spots, so an evening picnic doesn't eat into your whole day.

What We Actually Pack

A cool bag is non-negotiable, and I mean a proper one with ice packs, not the flimsy bag-for-life type. Spanish supermarket cheese does not survive an hour in August heat unrefrigerated, we found that out the hard way. We also bring a second water bottle just for freezing overnight and letting melt slowly through the day, it keeps drinks cold for hours longer than ice cubes alone. A picnic blanket with a waterproof underside is worth the extra few euros too, especially at the pine forest spots where the ground can be damp even in a dry month. And ants. Bring something to keep the ants off, whether that's a proper picnic hamper with a lid or just common sense about not leaving crumbs everywhere.

If golf's part of your day too, most of these spots sit within easy reach of the courses round here. Have a look at our rundown of golf courses near Roda Golf if you're planning to combine a round with a family picnic afterwards, some of the clubhouses also do a decent takeaway lunch if you'd rather not pack one.

None of these spots need booking or cost a penny, which is exactly how a good August picnic should work. Grab the kids, grab the cool bag, and get under some trees before the sun gets properly nasty. If you want more ideas for what's on locally this month, our guide to the area around Roda Golf has plenty of other suggestions, or drop us a line through our contact page if you fancy a local's recommendation for your specific dates. We're always happy to point people in the right direction, especially if it saves them a car full of cranky, overheated kids.
