5 Autumn Golf Tournaments Worth the Drive From Roda Golf

The scoreboard outside the clubhouse at Mar Menor Golf had three names scratched out and rewritten before I'd even finished my coffee. That's what September does round here. The heat finally lets go, the fairways stop frying by 10am, and every club within an hour of Roda Golf starts filling up its tournament board. If you spent August playing dawn rounds just to dodge the sun, autumn is when golf properly wakes up in this part of Murcia.

It's also, if I'm honest, my favourite stretch of the golfing calendar. The greens have recovered from the summer battering, the wind off the Mar Menor drops to something manageable, and the clubhouse terraces are pleasant enough for lunch again instead of a sprint indoors to the air conditioning. Plenty of that spills over into competitive golf, and a fair few of the region's better tournaments land right in this window.

Why Autumn Turns This Coast Into Tournament Country

Most Costa Cálida clubs run their main Order of Merit and open events between late September and November, partly because the weather cooperates and partly because it's when the northern European members come back out of hiding. You'll notice a lot more UK, Irish and Scandinavian plates in the car parks this month, and the visitor numbers at courses near San Javier and Torre-Pacheco tend to jump the moment the forecast drops below 30 degrees.

Clubs know this, so they schedule accordingly. Pro-ams, captain's prizes, charity opens and federation circuit stops all cluster into these eight or so weeks before the clocks change. If you fancy watching decent golf, or fancy playing in it yourself, autumn is the time.

Five Worth Packing the Clubs For

1. La Manga Club Autumn Pro-Am - held across the South and West courses, this one draws a proper mix of touring pros and members. 2. Mar Menor Golf Club Autumn Cup - the closest of the lot, ten minutes from Roda Golf towards Torre-Pacheco. Smaller field, friendlier prices, and a clubhouse lunch afterwards that's better than the entry fee has any right to buy you.
3. Lo Romero Golf Open - just over the border near Pilar de la Horadada, roughly 25 minutes away. The course drains beautifully after fewer downpours than most, so it's usually in excellent shape by the time this one comes round in October.
4. Alenda Golf Autumn Medal - a bit further out, closer to an hour, but the inland setting near Monforte del Cid gives you cooler morning temperatures and a genuinely different test from the coastal courses. Worth the drive if you want variety rather than another sea view.
5. Federación de Golf de la Región de Murcia Circuit Stop - the federation rotates its regional circuit through several clubs each autumn, often including a leg near Murcia city itself. Entry usually needs a valid federation licence, but it's the best standard of amateur golf you'll see all year without a plane ticket.

Dates and entry lists shift from year to year, so it's always worth ringing the pro shop directly or checking the club websites before you commit a Saturday to any of these.
