How to Adjust Your Swing for Roda Golf's September Winds

Last Tuesday I stood on the 14th tee at Roda Golf, picked out my usual 7-iron, and watched the ball sail dead straight into the lake short of the green. Not a mishit. A perfectly struck shot that the wind simply picked up and dumped in the water. That's September for you round here. The Mar Menor breeze that felt like a blessing in August turns into something you actually have to plan for once the season shifts, and if you're not adjusting your swing, you're donating balls to the lakes and the rough for the rest of the month.

Why September Wind Is Different From August's

August wind at Roda Golf is mostly the afternoon sea breeze, gentle and predictable, rolling in off the Mar Menor to cool things down. September is a different animal. You start getting the first proper fronts pushing through from the Atlantic, and the levante can turn up out of nowhere and hold steady at 15 to 20 knots for hours. It's stronger, it's less consistent in direction hole to hole, and because the course sits fairly open with the lakes and low scrub, there's not much to slow it down once it gets going.

The tricky part is that the wind often feels lighter than it is when you're standing on the tee with your back to it, then you turn ninety degrees on a dogleg and suddenly you're playing into a proper crosswind. I've been caught out enough times now that I check the flag on at least two greens before committing to a club, not just the one I'm walking to.

The Swing Changes That Actually Help

Forget trying to swing harder into the wind. That's the first instinct and it's the wrong one. A harder swing puts more spin on the ball, and spin is exactly what the wind grabs hold of and throws around. What works instead:

Widen your stance slightly and choke down an inch on the grip. This alone takes some speed off the swing and lowers your centre of gravity, which helps with balance when gusts hit mid-swing. Move the ball an inch or two back in your stance too. That de-lofts the club a touch and produces a flatter, more penetrating flight that the wind has less to work with.

Swing at about three-quarter pace rather than full tilt. I know it feels wrong to ease off, but a smoother three-quarter swing with a longer club produces a far more reliable, lower-flighted shot than a full swing with a shorter one. On the par 3s here, especially the one running alongside the water where the wind funnels straight down the fairway, this has saved me more strokes than any other single change.

If you play a draw or fade normally, expect it to be exaggerated by two or three times in the wind. I hit a gentle draw and in a crosswind from the left it turns into a real hook. Take that into account before you aim, not after you've watched the ball curve into the trees.

Club Up, Then Club Up Again

The old rule of thumb is one extra club for every ten miles an hour of wind against you, but honestly in a proper September gust at Roda Golf I'll take two clubs more and swing easy rather than force a shorter club at full effort. A smooth 6-iron beats a violent 8-iron every time when the wind's up, both for accuracy and for keeping your swing tempo intact for the next shot.

Around the greens, ditch the high, soft pitch shots you'd play in calm conditions. Bump-and-run everything you can. A low chip that runs along the ground is nearly wind-proof, while a flop shot in a crosswind is a lottery ticket. I've started leaving my 60-degree wedge in the bag more often in September and using a 9-iron or pitching wedge for anything within twenty yards of the green.

Reading It Before You Swing

Watch the trees near the clubhouse and the flags on two or three different greens before you decide on a club, since the wind isn't always doing the same thing across the whole course. If you're renting clubs or new to the area, the pro shop staff at the golf courses around Roda will tell you straight whether it's a "take an extra club" day or a "just go home" day, and they're usually right.

Worth Playing Through, Most Days

September wind isn't a reason to skip your round. Early mornings before 10am are still fairly calm most days, and the wind tends to build through the afternoon, so if you can get out early you'll dodge the worst of it. Later in the month, once the weather properly turns, you'll get genuinely still, mild days that are some of the best golf weather of the year here, warm enough for shorts but without August's brutal heat.
