Winter Golf in Murcia: Why February is the Best Time to Play
Most golfers think of Spain as a summer destination. They're wrong, at least if you're serious about actually enjoying your golf. Having played most of the courses within a 45-minute drive of here throughout the year, I'll say it plainly: February is when Murcia golf is at its absolute best. Here's why.
1. The Temperature is Perfect for Golf
February in Murcia averages around 17-18°C during the day, with plenty of sunshine and clear skies. That's not a heatwave, and it's not cold either. You can walk 18 holes in a light mid-layer without sweating through it or needing hand warmers. Compare that to July and August, when temperatures regularly hit 38-40°C and the round becomes an endurance test by the back nine.
The Costa Calida earns its name year-round, and February tends to deliver more sunny days than cloudy ones. Rainfall happens, but it passes quickly. I've had weeks here in February where every single round was played in bright sunshine with a light breeze off the Mar Menor. That's the kind of weather serious golfers travel for.
2. The Courses are Practically Empty
This alone is worth the trip. Roda Golf, La Serena, Hacienda Riquelme, Lo Romero, Valle del Este. In July these courses are packed. Tee times are blocked out weeks in advance, pace of play slows to a crawl, and you're queuing on tee boxes.
In February? You can often show up, book same-day, and play at your own pace. No waiting on the tee. No bottlenecks at par 3s. You finish a round in under four hours, which is how golf should be. If you're playing with a group and want back-to-back tee times, or want to squeeze two rounds into a day, February makes it easy.
The golf courses near Roda Golf Resort all have different characters and challenges, and getting to experience each one without the summer pressure makes for a proper golfing break rather than a rushed holiday tick-box exercise.
3. Green Fees Drop Considerably
Spanish golf courses operate on seasonal pricing, and winter rates represent genuinely good value. Courses that charge 80-100 euros per round in peak season often drop to 40-60 euros in February. Some offer twilight deals that make afternoon rounds even cheaper. If you're playing five rounds in a week (which is very doable here), you're saving real money.
Flights from the UK to Murcia-Corvera or Alicante are also significantly cheaper in February than in summer. Accommodation follows the same pattern. If you're self-catering, which many golf visitors prefer, holiday rentals near Roda Golf are available at winter rates that undercut the peak-season prices considerably. The overall cost of a February golf week can be half what it costs in June or September.
4. Course Conditions Hold Up Better Than You'd Expect
A fair question is whether the courses are actually in good shape in winter. The honest answer is: yes, mostly. The Murcian climate means grass stays green year-round on well-maintained courses. You're not dealing with frost delays, temporary greens, or the parched fairways you'll find on Spanish courses in August. The winter rains actually help here, keeping the rough lush and the fairways firm but not burnt.
Greens can occasionally be slower in winter as growth slows down, and you might find the odd soggy patch after heavy rain. But these are minor gripes compared to playing in baking heat on courses that haven't seen proper rainfall in two months. In my experience, February conditions at Roda Golf and the surrounding courses are genuinely good, often better than late summer.
5. The Whole Area is More Relaxed
Golf is only part of it. The reason people keep coming back to the Los Alcazares and San Javier area is the lifestyle. In February, you get that lifestyle without the crowds.
Los Alcazares has a proper paseo along the Mar Menor waterfront, and in winter you'll share it with local families and retired Spanish residents rather than thousands of tourists. The restaurants are open, the tapas bars are doing their thing, and you'll actually get a table at a decent hour. The Wednesday market in Los Alcazares still runs through winter and is well worth a wander.
The Mar Menor itself is calm and beautiful in February, the salt flats near Lo Pagan glow pink on clear days, and you can drive down to the mud baths at the northern end of La Manga without fighting for parking. Santiago de la Ribera does a decent Sunday morning market. If you want a day off the golf course, you've got options.

6. You Can Play Multiple Courses Without the Logistics Headache
Murcia has an impressive concentration of golf courses within a small area. From a base near Roda Golf, you can reach eight or ten different courses within 30-40 minutes. In summer, fitting in multiple courses requires military-level planning around heat, tee time availability, and energy levels. In February, you can comfortably play a different course every day without any of that.
Roda Golf itself is a links-style course that plays differently depending on the breeze off the Mar Menor. La Serena, a short drive towards Balsicas, offers a completely different experience. Hacienda Riquelme near Sucina is worth the 25-minute drive. In a week, you could realistically play five different courses, all in good conditions, without spending a fortune. That's a proper golf trip.

The bottom line is this: February doesn't require you to compromise on weather, course quality, or experience. It just requires you to ignore the assumption that spring and summer are automatically better. They're not. Pack your waterproof just in case, bring a light fleece for mornings, and book yourself a week in Murcia before the crowds return.
