Roda Golf Resort Launches Free Beach Shuttle for July 2026

Right, confession time. Last August I loaded two golf bags, three beach towels, a cool box and a very grumpy ten-year-old into the car for what should have been a five-minute run down to the coast. Twenty-five minutes and one row over a parking space near the paseo later, I swore blind I'd never bother again in high summer. So when word went round the clubhouse bar that Roda Golf has sorted out a free beach shuttle for July, I'll admit I did a little fist pump over my coffee.

It's the sort of thing that sounds small until you've actually tried to drive to Los Alcázares or Santiago de la Ribera on a Saturday in July with the whole of Murcia city apparently having the same idea. Then it sounds like the best news of the summer.

What the Shuttle Actually Does

The resort's running a free minibus service from outside reception, dropping off and picking up at three points along the coast: Los Alcázares town beach, the marina end near Santiago de la Ribera, and a stop close to the Mar Menor promenade for anyone fancying a wander towards Lo Pagán. It runs several times a day through July, roughly every ninety minutes from mid-morning until early evening, with an extra late run for anyone who wants to stay for sunset drinks at a chiringuito rather than fight traffic home.

No booking needed as far as I can tell, you just turn up at the pickup point a few minutes early. It's free for anyone staying on the resort, whether you're in a rental or own a place here, which makes a real difference if you're the type who books holiday rentals near Roda Golf for the summer and doesn't want a hire car sitting outside costing money and doing nothing.

My First Run on It

I tried it out with my wife and the kids on a Tuesday, mostly out of curiosity and partly because I fancied not being the one white-knuckling a hire car through a roundabout in 38 degrees. The minibus turned up more or less on time, air conditioning blasting, and the driver knew exactly where he was going, which is more than I can say for me most days.

Fifteen minutes later we were dropped right by the beach at Los Alcázares, no searching for shade to park in, no arguing about who forgot the beach umbrella in the boot because there was no boot to forget it in. We spent a proper lazy afternoon in the water, grabbed lunch at one of the beachfront places, and caught the shuttle back before the worst of the heat hit. My daughter, who complains about most things on principle, actually said it was "quite good, actually." High praise indeed.

The bit I liked most was not having that nagging feeling of needing to leave by a certain time to beat the traffic. You know the shuttle's coming back, so you can relax properly, which if you ask me is the whole point of being on holiday near the Mar Menor in the first place.

Making the Most of It

A few things I picked up after a couple of trips:

  1. Go for the mid-morning run if you want a spot on the sand before it fills up, especially near the Los Alcázares end where the shallow, warm water pulls in every family for miles.
  2. Bring a bit of cash. Not every chiringuito along the front takes cards, and you don't want to be caught out after a granizado on a 40 degree afternoon.
  3. Pair it with an early tee time. Play nine or eighteen holes on the Roda Golf courses before the heat properly kicks in, shower off, then hop the lunchtime shuttle down to the coast. Best of both worlds and you've earned the swim.
  4. If you're not sure of exact pickup times, ask at reception or drop a message through the contact page before you arrive. They've been good about sending the timetable ahead so you're not stood around guessing.

Why This Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds

Roda's always sold itself on being close enough to the beach without being right on top of it, which is nice for the peace and quiet but occasionally annoying in August when you just want to be in the sea five minutes ago. This shuttle closes that gap nicely. It also means anyone staying here without a car, or who'd rather not hire one for a week, still gets full run of the Mar Menor beaches without relying on taxis or the bus timetable from San Javier.

It's a small thing on paper, a free minibus, but it changes how a week here actually feels in summer. Less time spent circling for parking near Santiago de la Ribera, more time floating in that flat, warm, ridiculously calm water the Mar Menor's known for. If you're weighing up where to base yourself for a golf trip this summer, it's worth knowing the beach isn't the faff it used to be. Have a look at the area guide for the full picture of what's on the doorstep, and keep an eye on the resort news section for updates if the schedule changes as the summer goes on.

Either way, I've already told the wife we're skipping the car next time. My blood pressure will thank me, and so will anyone else stuck behind me trying to reverse park near the seafront.
