How to Visit Mazarrón's Salt-Pan and Coastal Lookouts in October

Most visitors to the Costa Cálida stick to the Mar Menor and never make the drive west to Mazarrón. That's a mistake, especially in October, when the heat has gone, the coach parties have thinned out and the coast there turns surprisingly wild. Give it a full day from Roda and you'll see a side of Murcia that feels a world away from the golf resort.

The drive takes around 50 minutes from Los Alcázares, heading via Cartagena and then on the RM-332 towards Puerto de Mazarrón. Leave by nine and you'll have the best of the light.

Why October Is the Month for Mazarrón

Summer here is fierce. Those exposed headlands and salt-pans offer almost no shade, and July afternoons can feel punishing. By mid-October daytime temperatures usually sit around 24 to 26°C, with a sea breeze that makes walking a pleasure rather than an ordeal.

The light is also better. Low autumn sun picks out the reds and ochres of the old mining hills behind the coast, and the sea takes on a deep blue you rarely get in August haze. Photographers know this, so don't be surprised to see a few tripods at sunset.

One warning. October can bring a sudden gota fría storm, so check the AEMET forecast the night before. The dirt tracks around the lookouts turn slippery after heavy rain, and I wouldn't attempt them in a downpour.

The Salt-Pans and Where to Stand

The salinas around Mazarrón are smaller and quieter than the big salt flats at San Pedro del Pinatar near the Mar Menor, which you may already know from a trip to Lo Pagán. That's part of the appeal. You'll often have the pans almost to yourself on a weekday.

Best Times of Day

Go early or late. Mid-morning is fine, but the pans look at their best in the last hour before sunset, when the shallow water turns pink and copper and wading birds pick through the shallows. Flamingos aren't guaranteed, but October migration season gives you a decent chance of spotting herons, avocets and sandpipers.

Bring binoculars if you have them, and keep to the marked paths. The salt crust is sharper than it looks and the edges can be soft.

What to Wear

Sturdy trainers, not flip-flops. Bring a light layer for the evening, since the temperature drops quickly once the sun goes down, and sunglasses for the glare off the water.

The Coastal Lookouts

South of Puerto de Mazarrón the road climbs towards the Bolnuevo coast, and this is where the real reward is. Here you'll find the eroded sandstone formations known as the Erosiones de Bolnuevo, wind-carved shapes that look like something from another planet. There's a proper boardwalk, free to use, and it's easy enough for families with pushchairs.

Further on, the lookouts above the cliffs towards Cabo Cope and the Calnegre coast give long views over empty coves. Park where you safely can, walk the last stretch, and take water with you. There's no café at the viewpoints themselves.

For lunch, head back into Puerto de Mazarrón and pick any chiringuito or harbour-front restaurant serving the local red prawn (gamba roja) or a plate of grilled dorada. A menú del día in October is usually fair value, and most places serve until about 4pm. Book ahead at weekends.

Making a Day of It from Roda

Here's the schedule I'd follow. Leave Roda by nine, reach the Bolnuevo boardwalk by half ten, drive on to the lookouts, have a long late lunch in the port, then finish at the salt-pans for sunset. You'll be back at Los Alcázares by eight or so.

If you're planning a golf trip around this, it works well as a rest day. Check our golf course information to plan rounds either side, and have a look at the area guide for the Mar Menor and Costa Cálida for other day trips within an hour's drive.

Staying for the week? Our holiday rentals near Roda Golf put you within easy reach of both the course and the western coast. Questions about routes or timings? Get in touch with us and we'll point you the right way.

Go in October, go on a weekday, and take your time. Mazarrón rewards people who aren't in a hurry.
